Wholegrain Mustard

This mustard smells AMAZING. Really. I keep going back just to smell it. Plus it tastes good too (always a plus).

Who knew it was this easy to make your own mustard? It takes only 5-10 minutes to make this mustard – although it does require 12 hour soaking time. Made with only 6 ingredients, none of which are sugar, alcohol or preservatives – all common ingredients of store bought mustard (even the organic stuff).

Making your own condiments is important for completely avoiding sugar, additives and preservatives. Plus you know exactly what’s going in it and where those ingredients come from. But don’t worry, this stuff will last 3-4 weeks in the fridge so you don’t need to make it that often to have some on hand at all times.

The best thing about this mustard is that you can flavor it to suit your tastes. Garlic, mustard, pepper, spices, honey, or just regular ‘ol mustard. It’s up to you.

Next up I’ll be tackling a healthy dijon mustard, which is an ingredient in so many recipes. And keep an eye out for a salad recipe using this mustard. (Make sure you are subscribed to the newsletter so you get that recipe directly to your inbox – see below the recipe for where to sign up).

Wholegrain Mustard

Total time:

This wholegrain mustard smells and tastes amazing, and is super simple to make. No sugar, alcohol or additives necessary.
Ingredients:
  • ¾ cup yellow mustard seeds
  • ¼ cup brown mustard seeds
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ½ cup water (or apple cider vinegar)
  • ½ lemon, juiced
  • ½ Tbsp maple syrup (or more to taste)
  • ¼ tsp salt
Method:
  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl (or small food processor canister) and cover with cling wrap.
  2. Let soak for 12 hours on the counter.
  3. Using a stick blender (or in a small food processor), roughly blend the mixture, to your desired consistency.
  4. If you want a smoother mustard, you can blend in a Vitamix with water to desired consistency.
Notes:
For honey mustard: replace maple syrup with Tbsp raw organic honey.
Flavor options: add fresh garlic, fresh onion, fresh cracked pepper, spices.
